Discuss & Decide

There should be a visible partnership with the local community, for instance through links with charities (can guests contribute to a wildlife or environmental charity during or after their stay?) and through a local purchasing programme.

An environmental message could be sent to guests or included on hotel stationery and green awards or certificates placed on display.

There may also be cuttings from local newspapers about the hotel’s interaction with the community.

Moving forward

There are a great many things that can be done to move forward. From links with charities and local organisations, and including local purchasing policies, to tree-planting policies.

Planting trees is a great way to offset your carbon footprint and become carbon neutral.

Through photosynthesis, trees absorb carbon dioxide to produce oxygen and wood, and through this process, carbon dioxide is converted into stored carbon, which is why trees are sometimes referred to as “carbon sinks”.

Each tree planted helps to offset your environmental impact by “breathing” in CO2 as it grows.

By helping to plant a tree you will be:

- offsetting CO2 emissions,
- providing local wildlife habitats,
- increasing the number of native trees in your country, and
- enhancing your country’s natural landscape.

By planting trees you will

HELP THE EARTH FOR MANY HUNDREDS OF YEARS, by passing on to future generations a valuable ecological heritage.
