the Big Blue: Arrábida Natural Park Group Tour

The Nature Park of Arrábida (Portuguese: Parque Natural da Arrábida) is an extraordinarily beautiful and protected mountain range, situated between the town of Sesimbra, the city of Setúbal, the hill of Palmela, and the Atlantic Ocean.

The mountain range is covered in a unique Mediterranean-like vegetation and has a very pleasant microclimate.

Three of the park’s beaches - Galapinhos, Portinho da Arrábida, and Figueirinha - are very popular among the inhabitants of Lisbon and Setúbal. Overlooking the three beaches is the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Arrábida (Convent of Our Lady of Arrábida), a former monastery established in the 16th century.

It is worthy to note that despite the inherent beauty of Arrábida, it would be wise to go whilst on a tour or with a local as it is very easy to get lost.

Apart from it’s unique and obvious beauty, it might interest some to know that a stretch of road in the natural park is notable for having a scene shot out of the 1969 James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

The Templar River

Embark on a quest for the Knights Templar legacy and marvel at the Convent of Christ (Portuguese: Convento de Cristo), an impressive former Roman Catholic convent and architectural monument. Originally a 12th-century Templar stronghold, when the order was dissolved in the 14th century the Portuguese branch was turned into the Knights of the Order of Christ, that later supported Portugal’s maritime discoveries of the 15th century

Get aboard and enjoy a sumptuous boat ride to the stunning Castle of Almourol. The castle is a medieval castle atop the islet of Almourol in the middle of the Tagus River, located in the civil parish of Praia do Ribatejo, and it is believed that the castle was constructed on the site of a primitive Lusitanian castro that was later conquered by the Romans during the 1st century B.C.E.
