Central Portugal ranges from the Atlantic coast to the mountainous interior. It is centred between Lisbon and Porto, with the university town of Coimbra as its capital. In this region, you can meander through a medieval walled village in Óbidos, enjoy the 15th century thermal baths in Caldas da Rainha, and even watch the highest waves in the world in Nazaré. The region is truly one of the most stunning in the country. A region where you can also take in the magic of Pope Francisco’s last stop in Portugal in Fátima, meet the Templars at the 12th century Unesco’s World Heritage Site in Tomar, and be left in awe by the splendour of the Gothic cathedral at Batalha. And if that’s not enough, there’s even the change of a visit to a 12th century castle built by the first Portuguese King in Leiria and an opportunity to take a ride on a gondola in the Venice of Portugal in Aveiro. There is much to do in the fabulous part of the country.
