Northern Portugal (Região Norte in Portuguese) is the “oldest” region of Portugal, where the nation began, and is home to Porto, Portugal’s second largest city and a busy industrial and commercial centre. The city has some 2 million inhabitants in a 50 km radius, with cities like Vila Nova de Gaia, Vila do Conde, Póvoa de Varzim and Espinho.
Famous as well for the Douro river estuary, this historical location was awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO in 1996 and is home to Port wine.
Braga, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real, Bragança, and Guimarães make up the remaining major cities in the north, each of which with its charm and rich, colourful history.
